Montreal Massacre Memorial

On December 6 UNBSJ, along with local community organizations, held a public memorial to commemorate the 14 women who lost their lives in an act of gender-based violence at the École Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec on December 6, 1989. The event also served as an opportunity to mourn all who have died as a result of gender based violence and reflect on the fact that for many women and girls it is a daily reality. By getting together each year on this date communities can discuss concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women.

Kayla (pictred below) volunteered as a guest speaker at the event and spoke of her own personal experience with gender-based violence. A man attacked Kayla while she was sleeping, beat her with a 2x6 and sexually assaulted her. This near death experience caused Kayla to suffer multiple injuries that she still suffers from today including memory problems and the loss of her hearing. Kayla told her story to show that she refuses to be a victim and hopes it inspires other women to know they do not need to feel shame about what has happened to them.
